The process of composting has many uses for people with different interests and or occupations. People using the process of composting can be homeowners, farmers and/or professional landscapers. The typical home owner can for example use a compost bin or pile to reduce the amount of thrash that’s been thrown away. The added benefit of using a bin or pile is creating an organic fertilizer for house plants of garden.

The farmer usually deals with a lot of waste from crops that are not consumable. The farmer can add his crop waste to a bin, along with manure that his livestock produces. When his compost is ready, it can be utilized to add nutrients in the soil. Finally the landscaper can choose to create compost for clients that only allow natural or organic materials to be used in their garden. Selecting your best method is really a personal preference, for there are many different ways of creating compost. One good and easy way is using a compost bin.

Types of compost bins

By now you have probably realized you have a lot of different composting bins to select from. The question that has raised to your mind is ‘what is the best composting bin?’. There are a few choices you have: build one, buy one or use the old fashioned compost pile or heap.

In your quest for the best compost bin, first let’s start by laying out the different types of bins / containers:

In the paragraphs below we will give a few examples of the compost bins types that are available.

Compost Tumbler
For starters we have the compost tumbler, which has some sort of cylindrical shape. You could somewhat compare this with a drum laying on its side. The compost tumbler is turned on a base and is totally supported on the flat ends of it. When you are turning the drum of the tumbler, you rotate and aerate all of the materials inside simultaneously. This is a very easy way to rotate the compost inside. This the best compost bin based on consumer reviews we could find.

Bio Orb Container
Secondly we have the bio-orb container, which kind of looks like a round ball. This container comes in various sizes as you will see. One of the greatest benifits of the bio-orb container is the ease of getting it around. Just roll over the container on the ground, which in return aerates and rotates the contents. A simple trick that does not require a lot of effort. The container has many little airholes to stimulate the aeration of the contents.

Wooden Box or Wire Mesh
Last but not least we bring the option of uising a wooden framed box with mesh sides. This type of solution can be purchased, but also easily made at home if you like. The only thing required to build your own wooden framed box is four wooden pallets. Just nail them together and there is your compost bin, created in a very inexpensive way! The other option you have is to drive to your local hardware store and get a roll of wire mesh.

Both of these inexpensive options allow the air to circulate pretty well. Just make sure the contents are not too much compacted.

Compost pile
When you are not looking to use a compost bin yet, the best way to start out is using a pile of grass clippings that you can collect from lawn mowing. The other option is to create a big pile of leaves. Make sure to stir and rotate the pile while it grows over time. The big downside of having a compost pile is it’s not so easy to stir and rotate, since the pile is not contained.
